Top things to do with the kids in Milan

By Helen | on October 13, 2013 | 0 Comment
Italy

As a city that’s known for its art, architecture, fashion and fine food, Milan often appears to be quite an adult destination. And while it definitely does have plenty to offer older visitors, it’s actually also home to lots of attractions that are great for families. So, in this post we’ll be taking a look at some of the very best things to do in Milan with the kids.

One of the best things about taking a family trip to this Italian city is that a lot of the attractions have a wide appeal, which means that your toddlers and teens can enjoy them as much as you – even if it’s slightly different elements you’re appreciating! The key with any family holiday is achieving a good balance between sightseeing and relaxation, so make sure you’re not on the go all the time – worn out kids don’t make for a happy holiday.

To that end, it’s worth hiring a car through a company like Auto Europe. This means you can get from the airport to your accommodation without having to lug heavy bags on public transport, as well as be able to whisk your children to fun attractions just outside the city, such as Gardaland Waterpark, with minimum fuss.

Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci

No matter what age your kids are, a visit to the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci is an absolute must. This national science and technology museum is not only the biggest in the country, but it’s also one of the most fun. Come here and you and the kids can see amazing re-creations of machines designed by Da Vinci; in fact, upon its opening back in 1953, this establishment was centred on his works.

Today, the Da Vinci section is just one part of the museum, but it definitely remains one of the most fascinating. What makes it so good for families is the fact that you can touch the models, which means curious kids can see exactly how they would have worked. What’s more, the lab gives children the chance to have a go at things like experiments and painting to help them really get to grips with the topics they’re encountering.

Sempione Park

Milan-Park

Another great way to enjoy Milan with the kids is to take them to Sempione Park. Younger children can burn off any excess energy on the swings, slides and climbing ropes of the playground, while teens can lie back on the grass and soak up the sun. Unsurprisingly, this green oasis in the city is a great place for a picnic, so to make the most of your time here pack some goodies for a leisurely lunch.

While this park is very beautiful, it’s worth remembering that there are a fair few cultural attractions here too. For instance, there are works of art – such as the Mysterious Baths by Giorgio de Chirico – dotted around the park. So, go for a stroll and see what you can spot.

Duomo di Milano

Our final suggestion is the Duomo di Milano, which is the most stunning building in the city. It is perhaps more of an adult attraction than those mentioned above, but it is definitely a must-visit on any trip to Milan. Plus, its colourful stained glass windows and hundreds of sculptures and paintings are bound to enthrall young eyes – let them lead the way and look at what interests them most.

They’re bound to be bowled over by the sheer size of this Gothic masterpiece. Covering 11,700 sq m, it feels incredibly vast. Bear in mind that you can also head up to the roof for amazing views across Milan – and a close-up look at the grotesques! – which is likely to have a particularly appeal among slightly older kids and teens.
