There has always been a strong connection between the US and the UK. Americans seem to enjoy travelling over here as much as we enjoy flying there. With so much history and culture, it is not hard to see why Americans would flock over here in their millions every year. Whether it is to take in some of the breathtaking landscapes or take in some of the world-famous landmarks, there is plenty to entice Americans across the Atlantic, With tourism of the UK by Americans in mind, there was a rather fascinating survey conducted by the holiday luggage door to door courier service Send My Bag, that is worth considering.
Interesting Facts About Americans Travelling To The UK
Send My Bag’s survey was created to discover which landmarks Americans would most like to visit if they came to the UK and the luggage delivery company asked 5000 residents who were all over the age of 18 years old. The reason for asking such a question was if you look at some of the statistics about Americans travelling to the UK, the numbers are quite interesting. For instance in just the year 2014, Americans and Americans only spend over £17 billion in the UK and on average every year there are around 34 million Americans who visit the UK.
The list was a pick of 10 of the most popular landmarks for tourists regardless of whether they were residents, American tourists or other nationalities. Among those in the list included York Minster, Westminster Abbey, Edinburgh Castle, Roman Baths in Bath, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace. While the list itself may not have been surprising, it is very intriguing to see that the Royal Family are still something that foreigners, in particularly those from the US, come to Britain to visit and learn about.
22% of the vote, the winning majority, went to Buckingham Palace. The building alone, even without a living and breathing monarchy tied to it, is distinctly British and historically significant, but without the Royals living and working from there, it’s just an old house. The Queen and her extended family are what makes the Palace all the more intriguing.
Why Americans Love The Royals So Much
By far the biggest reason why the Royals are popular with many people in America is Princess Diana. Before she died she was seen as the beautiful woman she clearly was, but it was her humanitarian work and her very “human” attitude to it that won her the hearts of many people around the world. Even in death, the whole world mourned for her as if it was their own loss and especially for her kids. Now it’s Diana’s legacy that helps keep the Royals relevant and current with American travellers.
Everyone seems to love the unfolding love story that eventually became a solid marriage between Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton. Now with two children, they are becoming the young face of the British Monarchy, alongside William’s brother Harry, who has also helped with humanitarian work, served in the army and done a lot of great work over in the US.
